In their second match of the Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh clashed with Sri Lanka. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Bangladesh stepped onto a slightly tricky pitch that looked like was difficult for the batters.

The initial moments were not good for Bangladesh as Tanzid Hasan was sent back to the pavilion without scoring in just the second over, courtesy of Maheesha Theekshana. At the score of 36 for 3 in the tenth over, it was quite evident that Bangladesh batters were unable to adapt to the slow condition of the wicket and were struggling big time.

A glimpse of hope emerged with a partnership between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy, attempting to steer the ship but still, despite Shanto’s valiant efforts, who managed to score 89 runs, Bangladesh’s batting lineup faltered. The team was eventually bundled out for a mere 164 runs, failing to play their full 50 overs.

Matheesha Pathirana emerged as the standout performer for Sri Lanka, showcasing his prowess with the ball by securing four wickets.

As Sri Lanka started their pursuit of the 165-run target, they faced a few early setbacks, losing three wickets in quick succession. However, a significant partnership between Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka was enough for Sri Lanka to win the match. Their good performance with the bat, scoring 54 and 62 runs respectively, steered Sri Lanka to an easy victory in the end.

With this triumph, Sri Lanka kicked off their Asia Cup campaign on a positive note, while Bangladesh were left to rethink their performance and regroup for the upcoming challenges. On September 3, Bangladesh will be playing their second game of the tournament against Afghanistan, while Sri Lanka will also face Afghanistan on September 5 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
