The eighteenth match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 witnessed Jamaica Tallawahs lock horns with Trinbago Knight Riders at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown on September 3. The Trinbago-based team managed to secure a nail-biting victory by just two runs in the contest.

Asked to bat first, Trinbago Knight Riders posted a total of 142/8 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings had its share of ups and downs, with some key performances. Mark Deyal played a pivotal role, contributing 30 runs off 23 balls, featuring three sixes. Lorcan Tucker also chipped in with 30 runs off 27 balls, including two fours and as many sixes. Meanwhile, Kieron Pollard played a captain’s knock and scored 33 runs off 27 balls for the Knight Riders.

However, it was the impressive bowling display by the Jamaica Tallawahs that kept the Trinbago Knight Riders in check. Mohammad Amir led the charge with a stellar performance, taking three wickets for just 20 runs in his four overs. Kelvin Pittman also shone with the ball, claiming three crucial wickets for 27 runs. These efforts ensured Trinbago ‘s total remained within reach for the Tallawahs.

Jamaica Tallawahs Innings

In their pursuit of 143 for victory, Jamaica Tallawahs began steadily. Brandon King top-scored with 36 runs off 25 balls, displaying his power-hitting ability with four boundaries and two sixes. Nevertheless, TKR’s bowlers, led by Andre Russell (3wickets) and Sunil Narine (2 wickets), made it difficult for the Tallawahs to maintain the required run rate. Among the three scalps bagged by Russell, one came off a brilliant catch from Nicholas Pooran that left many in awe.

Nicholas Pooran plucks a one-handed blinder

It all happened on the first ball of the ninth over when Russell delivered a fuller and outside off delivery to Jermaine Blackwood, and he tried to drive it on the up over mid-off, where Pooran timed his jump brilliantly and pluck a stunner to send the batter back to the pavilion. Pooran was pumped up after completing the catch and celebrated the dismissal in full excitement.

As far as the result of the match is concerned, Chris Green provided some late excitement, smashing 32 runs off just 16 balls. However, Jamaica Tallawahs still finished their innings at 140/7 in 20 overs, agonizingly falling short of the target by a mere two runs.
