India came into the encounter against debutants Nepal as the overwhelming favourites. The two teams faced each other in match 5 of the ongoing Asia Cup event in Pallekele. The Nepal batters struggled to play Ravindra Jadeja, who used all his experience to finish with a three-for. Siraj also bowled with steam and finished with figures of 3/61 in 9.2 overs. Thanks to a brilliant 56-ball 48 from Sompal Kami, Nepal managed to get past the 200-run mark. They were eventually bowled out for 230 with 10 balls left.
In reply, Rohit and Shubman Gill negotiated 2.1 overs before rain stopped play. When the game eventually started, India were given a target of 145 in 23 overs. Gill showed intent early on while Rohit was happy to play the waiting game. However, once the Mumbai batter got his eye in, he latched onto any loose delivery that Nepal bowlers dished out and also played some unique shots in the process. The ‘Men in Blue’ finished the chase with 17 balls and 10 wickets in hand. The Indian captain was unbeaten on 74 off 59 balls while his young and talented partner finished on 67* off 62 balls. With this win, India reached the Super Four stage and they will face Pakistan on Sunday, September 10.
