Former India captain MS Dhoni is counted among the greatest finishers in the history of international cricket due to his remarkable exploits in all three formats of the game. Dhoni took India over the line on several occasions stamping his authority as the best finisher of his era. However, he faced tough competition from former South Africa batter AB de Villiers, who was also known to finish matches for his team with some mind-boggling innings.

Recently, De Villiers was asked who’s a better finisher between him and Dhoni. Answering the question, Mr. 360 jokingly said that it’s him. However, he later on expressed his admiration for the Indian wicketkeeper batter and said that Dhoni’s World cup winning six in 2011 will be engraved in his mind forever.

“Obviously me (laughs). No, I would say definitely MS Dhoni. I love watching him play. The things he has pulled off in the past… I think of that 2011 World Cup – hitting that straight six to win the World Cup. That will be engraved in my mind forever. MS has done it so many times in all formats of the game,” said De Villiers in a Q&A session on his 360 show.

Settling the age-old debate, the former South Africa captain further said he’s happy to give credit where it’s due and called Dhoni a great role model for all players around the world.

MS is the best finisher: AB de Villiers

“There’s always been a big debate over who’s the best finisher – me or him? We can settle it now – I say MS is the best finisher. I am very happy to give credit where credit is due. For CSK in the T20s and IPL and for India in all formats of the game – just a fantastic person, just a fantastic man. A great role model for all cricket players around the world,” he added.

Notably, de Villiers retired from all forms of the game in 2021 while MS Dhoni hasn’t retired from IPL yet. The Chennai Super Kings captain led his team to their record-levelling fifth title earlier this year and promised to return on the field once again for his fans.
