The Super Four stage clash of the Asia Cup 2023 between India and Sri Lanka commenced at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo on September 12. India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first.

India got off to a solid start, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opening the innings. The Indian skipper became the second-fastest batter to reach the 10,000-run mark in the ODI format. The 36-year-old also broke former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi’s Continental Championship record for most sixes.

India’s first wicket fell in the 12th over when Dunith Wellalage dismissed Shubman Gill with his first ball of the game. The 20-year-old then dismissed Virat Kohli for a paltry score of three runs. Rohit attempted to steady the innings, but the youngster sent him back to the pavilion, flipping the game. The 36-year-old amassed 53 runs from 48 deliveries, including seven boundaries and two maximums.

KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan then consolidated and slowly worked their way through the spin overs, eventually stitching up a 63-run stand. Wellalage, on the other hand, returned and claimed his fourth wicket, removing Rahul for 39 off 44 balls. Charith Asalanaka then dismissed Ishan Kishan, who had scored 33 runs off 61 deliveries.

India unravelled quickly following this, losing the wickets of Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav, respectively. Meanwhile, rain again played spoilsport, and India were at 197/9 after 47 overs. The game continued once the rain stopped, and Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj attempted to keep the last wicket intact.

However, Maheesh Theekshana struck and dismissed Axar for 26 runs as Sri Lanka bundled out India for 213 runs in 49.1 overs. The reigning champions will be overjoyed with their bowling performance and will be looking to easily chase down the target.
