Australia brought back memories of 2006 Johannesburg as they put the South African bowlers to the sword on a belter of a track at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein in the second ODI of the three-match series on Saturday, September 09.
Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl. In the first ODI at the same venue, the batters struggled on a sluggish surface, which got a tad better under the lights. This must have influenced Bavuma’s decision to bowl first in the second ODI. However, the pitch was a batter’s paradise and David Warner and Travis Head got their team off to a flier. The latter was the striking of the two as he scored a swashbuckling 36-ball 64. The left-handed duo notched up a 100-run partnership inside ten overs.
In desperate need of a wicket, Bavuma introduced Tabraiz Shamsi into the attack in the 12th over. He produced the good immediately as he dismissed Head and Mitchell Marsh off consecutive deliveries in his first over. Warner, however, continued to bat in his own indomitable way and registered his 20th ODI hundred and fifth against South Africa. His 151-run partnership off 124 balls with Marnus Labuschagne put Australia into a position of glorious strength.
After Warner’s dismissal, Labuschagne notched up his second ODI century to aggravate the headache of Australian selectors, who didn’t name him in their provisional World Cup squad. The right-hander formed a belligerent 83-run partnership alongside Josh Inglis, who scored a 37-ball 50. After Labuschagne was dismissed for 124 off 99 balls by Shamsi, the hosts pulled things back considerably. In fact, in the last five overs, the tourists could only manage to score 34 runs for the loss of three wickets. The Aussies finished at 392/8 in their 50 overs. Shamsi was the pick of the bowlers, as he finished with figures of 4/61 in 10 overs.
